Many women are discovering the multiple benefits associated with chiropractic care during pregnancy. The most prevalent complaint where women search out chiropractic care in pregnancy is for low back pain. As more women use chiropractic care they are experiencing additional health benefits to chiropractic care in pregnancy.
The International Chiropractic Pediatric Association is involved in many collaborative studies to show the efficacy and safety of chiropractic care in pregnancy. Chiropractors are participating in advanced specific chiropractic techniques which facilitate easier, safer deliveries for the mother and baby. One such technique is called the Webster Technique. The Webster technique helps turn breached position babies to ready them for delivery.
In one study 84% of patients receiving Chiropractic Adjustments reported relief of back pain during pregnancy. There was significantly less likelihood of back labour when spinal manipulative therapy was administered during pregnancy.
The most common reason for severe low back pain was dysfunction of the sacroiliac joints. I have seen hundreds of cases over the years that we have been able to resolve and manage.
One of the reasons for back pain that I personally believe it is so significant is the fact that as women go through the pregnancy the body produces hormones to allow the ligaments to stretch. As the hormones increase there is ligamentous instability and that coupled with structural imbalance leads to symptoms such as low back pain, leg pain and groin pain to mention a few.
There are several non-invasive techniques that can help stabilize and balance the spine. Over the years in practice I have learned or developed certain protocols for adjusting the pregnant woman with a great deal of success.
One such technique is designed to help women with severe back pain during labour. Administered properly the pump can be a tremendous asset. As it is impractical to be at every delivery the procedure can be taught to the father or partner to minimize back labour and assist in a more comfortable delivery.
The bottom line in my opinion is that all pregnant women should have a chiropractor on their team to mitigate back pain, improve function and structural integrity, and help with a properly functioning nervous system. These steps ultimately improve health and wellness.
