Over the years, I have kept an eye on the trends of health care matters over my 35+ years in practice. Prior to that, growing up my father was both a Chiropractic and Naturopathic Doctor.
In today’s world, with Google at the tip of your fingers, information is available at lightening speeds. After spending some time researching the current health trends of 2017, I have put together this blog to offer you some of this information all in one quick read!
These are a few of the things that I found on one site…Kawa, Aerial Yoga, Avocado Oil, Emotional Freedom Tapping, Alkaline Water, Dragon Fruit, Cauliflower Rice, Black Garlic, Matcha Tea, Cold Brew Coffee, Sweet Potato Toast, Sound Baths, Watermelon Water, Kafir …OH MY, if we had only known sooner we could of averted so many devastating health issues.
Clearly I am talking tongue in cheek. As I reviewed the list, there are some things that I have never heard of. Further to that, I am not casting aspersions on any of these concepts as I have not evaluated them fairly. I suspect many of these things are helpful but it is of paramount importance to understand that none of these are your health homeruns.
Over the years I have seen trends come and go and come back again. At one point, fat and nutritional cholesterol was the ultimate demon and medical authorities steered people away from fat until it became apparent that there was a consequence to limiting fat.
The brain has a large component of cholesterol and it was postulated that Alzheimer’s Disease showed a decrease in the white matter of the brain with the reduction of fats.
Is this an isolated concept? Absolutely not. As a matter of fact, every year dating back as far as I can remember there are the new claims of the real deal. The Truth however; does not come and go…it is steadfast.
I believe that what I have espoused all my years in practice is the same concept today, as it was in the 1980s. It is what I coined the 5 Pillars of Health and Wellness. These do not change from year to year and if followed will go a long way to maintaining your health. Those Pillars are as Follows:
- Proper Sleep and Rest
- Proper Exercise
- Proper Nutrition
- Positive Mental Attitude
- Properly Functioning Nervous System
Now an entire book can be written about each category but for the readers digest version, you need adequate and restful sleep as this is when the body repairs itself. You can’t burn the candle at both ends and expect a favourable outcome.
Proper exercise refers to getting your cardiovascular rate up not merely pumping iron to build muscle.
Nutrition, well put quite simply food is the fuel your body runs on and it needs a balance of fats, protein and carbohydrates.
You need to wake up each morning with a positive mental attitude telling yourself its a great day even if it the biggest lie you will tell you.
Properly functioning nervous system is what I do as a chiropractor. We keep the spine tuned and able to function at its highest level. Anyone with a spine should be evaluated on a regular basis.
If you have not been spinally checked, book an appointment today to get evaluated.
